Player-coach Lloyd Blackman made a scoring return to old club Whitstable as Ashford United completed their competitive pre-season build-up at Belmont on Saturday.

It was another good test against Ryman League, Division 1 South opposition, following games at Ramsgate and Faversham and again United went in front.

Gary Mickelborough went close midway through the first half, before home keeper Luke Watkins denied United twice in six minutes, tipping the second effort over the bar.

Ian Pulman had Town’s best chances before skipper Gary Clarke tapped home United’s opener four minutes before half-time.

United continued

their good WHITSTABLE T ASHFORD UTD work in the second half and pressed for a second, only for Pulman to put Whitstable level just past the hour mark, punishing a United defensive mistake.

Ryan Golding added a second from the spot three minutes after Scott Heard was fouled before the latter and Tom Loynes missed out on adding to Town’s lead

Golding doubled his tally 17 minutes from time, after United goalkeeper Joe Mant kept out Heard’s first effort, before Blackman headed in Ashford’s second just before the end.
