Ashford Borough Council is to borrow £1.4 million from central government towards building a new housing development in Charing in a bid to cut the number of families on the waiting list for affordable homes.

Housing Minister Brandon Lewis gave the green light to the deal on Monday for ABC to put funds towards 21 affordable homes in a 61-home development in the Charing area.

Developer Ward Homes will work with the council and expect building will begin in Spring 2014 and be completed by March 2016.

Ward member for Charing and ABC leader Cllr Gerry Clarkson, said: “Sensible, quality development can lead to economic growth and even breathe new life into a community.

“Charing will certainly benefit from this mixed tenure development. We firmly believe that we lead the way in the county with the provision of new affordable homes and this announcement is further demonstration that our record of delivery is recognised at the highest level.”
