Nicholls makes his mark
Max Nicholls was runner-up in the 7.5k race at the IAAF World Mountain Running Championships at Sedbergh in Cumbria last weekend. The Ashford AC youngster took the lead early on and ran alongside eventual winner Andrew Lawlor from Edinburgh at one stage, before finishing with a powerful run up the final ascent to finish in 36 minutes 50 seconds. The course took the runners up a 700m climb to Howgills Fells, situated between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Nicholls’ performance was timely as he hopes to win a place in the Great Britain squad for the World Championships in Tuscany next month. The Cumbria event also doubled as trials. He prepared with uphill treadmill sessions at the Stour Centre, which acted as a substitute for the flat areas around his Romney Marsh home.
