INJURY WORRIES AHEAD OF FA CUP CLASH
Ashford United will check on the fitness of Tom Scorer and Andy Irvine ahead of the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round trip to Guildford City on Saturday.
The pair picked up hamstring problems in the 4-0 win at Lordswood on Tuesday night, and received immediate treatment on the touchline from new physio Ben Cole.
Boss Paul Chambers said: “Both are struggling with little niggles, so we took both off as a precaution, and hopefully have caught them in time.
“They could have played on, but there was no point because we didn’t want to lose them for a long while.”
The tie at the Spectrum Arena revives memories of previous Southern League meetings between the two re-formed clubs, and Chambers said: “We would like a nice little run, and there’s some good prize money available
“We are going there looking to give a good account of ourselves, and hopefully get through. It will be a good day out and we are looking forward to it.”
Chambers is delighted with the club’s perfect start, but continues to play down United’s title chances, despite others tipping them as favourites.
He said: “We are happy doing what we have got to do. It’s nice to have got a few goals, and coming from a lot of different scorers.
“We are still knitting the team together but there is a good buzz around the dressing room, we have lost some good players but replaced them with quality.
“It was a shame we lost Sam Fisher who is doing a university degree but Lee Winfield has come in, and Liam Walsh has come in at the back and been brilliant.
“We have been very impressed with him, he is one we are really over the moon about.
“He is already forging a good partnership with Pat Kingwell.”
Meanwhile, skipper Gary Clarke confirmed his hat-trick against Fisher on Saturday was his first ever in senior football, having made his debut for Town aged 16 – 12 years ago.
Liam Whiting is back available for selection after serving a two-game ban held over from last season, while the club are still waiting on international clearance for new defender Phil Leonard.
The Supporters Club AGM takes place on Saturday week, following the home game against Greenwich Borough.
