ROCHESTER 1 ASHFORD UTD 2
A goalkeeping gaffe by Rochester’s Joe Hagan gifted Ashford United an 89th-minute winner to preserve their 100% start to the Southern Counties East League season at Rede Court Road on Tuesday, writes Andrew Gidley. The game look destined for a draw, when Lee Winfield swung in a cross which Hagan looked to have it covered, only to allow the ball to slip under him into the net. The goal was a second blow for the home side, following the 49th minute dismissal of central defender Tom Carr. He was shown a straight red for kicking out at an opponent, an incident not seen by many spectators. Substitute Tom Scorer put Ashford ahead six minutes later. He shrugged off several challenges, before cutting inside and firing past Hagan. The lead lasted only six minutes, the visitors failing to deal with a freekick, allowing Ricky Gundry to pounce. Scorer hit the bar soon after and Kieran Byrne and James Everitt then had efforts blocked before Hagan pushed away another effort. Andy Irvine replaced Everitt but only lasted three minutes, suffering a recurrence of the hamstring injury.
