First defeat marks the end of cup group stage
Kent’s unbeaten run in the Royal London One-Day Cup ended with a seven-wicket loss against Middlesex at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, last Wednesday. The visitors won the Group B clash, which was both sides’ final group game, with 37 balls to spare after chasing down Kent’s 191 all-out. The result made no difference to qualification for the knockout stages, with Kent already through to the quarter-finals while Middlesex were already out of contention. Opener Daniel BellDrummond top scored with 51 for Kent while Fabian Cowdrey made 44 as their side were dismissed for under 200 for the first time in this year’s competition. Former Kent batsman Joe Denly took the wickets of Alex Blake (20) and Mitch Claydon (0) on his way to finishing with 2-31. In reply, opener David Malan hit an unbeaten 76, sharing an unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership of 59 with his captain, Eoin Morgan (31 not out). Kent paceman Doug Bollinger ended his stint with the county by taking 1-31 off 10 overs after taking the wicket of fellow Australian, Test opener Chris Rogers, for 23.
