Shoppers see point of plant
Wyevale Garden Centres are expecting six poinsettia plants to be sold every minute over the next five weeks as the nation gears up for Christmas.
The UK’s largest garden centre chain – with branches in Willesborough, Hamstreet and Folkestone – says the traditional Christmas plant has enjoyed a revival in popularity in recent years, with the company expecting the poinsettia to be their bestselling indoor plant of the year.
“The poinsettia is the quintessential Christmas plant,” said Sarah Fuller, marketing director at Wyevale Garden Centres. “All other plants are sold before their development process is finished.
“But the poinsettia is sold at its most beautiful and in full bloom – one of the reasons our customers love to give and receive one as a gift during the festive season and its everincreasing popularity.”
Originally from Mexico, the plant is best grown to perfection in cooler climates, with UK nurseries equipped to grow plants that are hardier, longer lasting beyond the festive season and easier to look after than imported ones.
Wyevale Garden Centres are expecting a record 12 million shoppers through the door in the run up to Christmas.
