Cup of foe is season opener
Ashford start the new rugby season with a Kent Cup first-round clash against old rivals Folkestone.
New captain Rhys Funnell’s side are in good shape for Saturday’s home tie after a 42-13 friendly success against Sheppey last weekend.
The skipper scored twice, with Joe Lakin, Dan Brown, Ben Cooper and Chris Finch also crossing the try-line.
Ashford play a league above Folkestone in London 2 South East but Fussell is taking nothing for granted.
He said: “We want to get a good win before the league starts and we’ll have a strong squad out on Saturday.
“Folkestone are in the league below but we were together in London 3 South East a few years ago and the local rivalry means it’s always a tough fixture.
“It’s unusual to start the season with a cup game but it’s a good one to get the boys excited.
“It ups the stakes being against Folkestone and the Kent Cup is a competition we want to do well in.”
Fussell believes there’s a togetherness about Ashford going into the new campaign.
He said: “The players are positive and the attitude is good. We’re a tight-knit group. We’ve been training hard and looking forward to the season.”
Ashford open their league campaign at Old Colfeians on September 19.
