Meanwhile at the Save the Children charity shop in North Street, Ashford volunteer Barbara Micklethwaite said there had been a noticeable increase in bags coming in this week.

She said: “We’ve had an awful lot of donations over the last week or so. It might just be the time of year, or it might be because of what people have seen on television.

“We’re always glad for any donations which come in, but we’d also like volunteers to help us, either serving in the shop or helping out back.”

She said volunteering for half a day or a full day each week is ideally suited to those who have recently retired. For more information call the shop on 01233 640665.
