Council tax dodger taken to court
A council tax dodger has been given a three-month suspended prison sentence after failing to pay more than £4,000 over a three-year period.
Perry Murphy, of Oxenturn Road in Wye, appeared at Dover Magistrates’ Court last month after Ashford Borough Council (ABC) made repeated efforts to contact him for payment.
The 52-year-old had racked up £4,351 in arrears between July 2010 and February 2013 at his previous address in Brook.
The court was told that ABC had “bent over backwards” to give Murphy the chance to pay.
Cllr Neil Shorter, who is the cabinet member responsible the council’s finances, said: “This is an example of the severity with which we, and the courts, view the nonpayment of council tax.
“It is important that action was taken and we hope that this successful conviction acts as a deterrent to others.
“Our message is clear. People who refuse to pay their council tax are putting at risk the services that we, and others, provide.
“We will not tolerate such avoidance.”
