Grants for rural projects

A fund for countryside ideas is offering grants from a pot of £725,000 to innovative rural projects across the country.

The Prince’s Countryside Fund aims to improve livelihoods and communities for future farmers.

Fund director Claire Saunders said: “The pressure on those who care for rural Britain is continuing to mount. On average a farmer is forced out of business every day because of severe downturns in the price for milk, and while many in dairy are paid less than the price of production, many others struggle with rapidly decreasing prices for British lamb.

“This, coupled with a younger generation disillusioned with a future in British agriculture, and the disappearance of shops, pubs and rural services means the countryside is facing a crisis this autumn – and farms and communities must push back and become resilient.”

The funding supports projects that encourage young people into rural careers or help existing farmers to become sustainable.
