Mrs Webster, a former ground crew member for a hot air balloon company, revealed that before the crash she was planning to be an organ donor for her husband.

Mr Webster needed a replacement kidney and doctors were carrying out tests to see if she could donate one.

But after the crash – and the numerous operations she faced after being airlifted to hospital – she can’t face another operation.

She told the judge: “I had offered to be a donor for my husband and was going through the required checks last year.

“But now I feel that I cannot handle any more surgery.”

Mrs Webster added that she feels “pretty bad” as she watches her husband struggle with his health.

Her husband, who suffers from low kidney function added: “At the time Carol was going to be tested to see if she could be a donor for me.

“After the crash she, understandably, has decided she no longer wants to go through any more surgery. So now I am on the kidney waiting list. I see this as a direct result of the crash.”
