Stack ‘solution’ is short-sighted

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - Points Of View -

Are we really surprised by the Operation Stack masterplan that has been put forward which is to build vast lorry parks in Kent at enormous cost that will only be used occasionally, a solution our local MP Damian Green appears to endorse.

This myopic plan epitomises the failure of Government to appropriately address a problem that has existed for more than 25 years.

The people of Kent continue to bear the burden of the vast convoys of lorries from Europe even though Kent is merely a gateway to their ultimate destinations across the country.

Let us have a solution that addresses more than just the problem of Operation Stack. The congestion faced daily on key roads caused by the vast number of lorries could be reduced by a move to get large numbers of these lorries on to the railway network.

Why are we not creating railway hubs across the country that would enable lorries to disembark close to their ultimate destinations? When an Operation Stack type situation arises lorries could then be held at these railway hubs around the country and not have them causing chaos in Kent.

Of course such a plan would no doubt be substantially more costly in financial terms for the government than one building vast unused concrete lorry parks in Kent, so despite its obvious attractions would be a non-starter for a short sighted government.
