The evening of entertainment last Wednesday included an exhibition of the WI’s history and a display of craft work.
More than 50 people took their seats at decorated tables in the Chessenden Lane hall where special guest Marion Rose, chairman of the East Kent Federation of Women’s Institutes, proposed a toast to the organisation.
Diners then tucked into a feast from different eras, prepared by Smarden member Christine Young, which included coronation chicken, from an original recipe, and sherry trifle.
David and Linda Robins addressed the audience as the Stapleton Cottons, founders of the WI in Anglesey and the Smarden Players sang wartime songs.
The vote of thanks was given by Margaret Twort joint president of the Smarden WI, who declared that lone goth Jenny Mowatt, who shares the presidency with her, was the winner of the fancy dress competition.
