Ill-dis­ci­pline proves costly

Danny Bushell’s solo try was the high­light in Ash­ford’s open­ing-day Lon­don South East 2 de­feat at Lee Green in south-east Lon­don.

Bushell pounced early in the sec­ond half, brush­ing de­fend­ers off be­fore div­ing over in the cor­ner to put the visi­tors 15-12 in front.

How­ever, Colfes then went in front with a try from a five-me­tre scrum. This was con­verted and a penalty was kicked for 22-15.

Henry Hall kicked his sec­ond penalty for Ash­ford be­fore the end, land­ing it from 45 me­tres af­ter Fus­sell had been taken out off the ball.

New skip­per Rhys Fus­sell said: “We were gut­ted we lost as we played well again but poor dis­ci­pline let us down, with two yel­low cards.

“Peter Walsh took one for the team af­ter sev­eral warn­ings and Dan Sher­rin went for han­dling in a ruck.” OLD COLFEIANS ASH­FORD

Ear­lier, Colfes had gone 7-0 up be­fore Shane Red­man crashed over for Ash­ford.

Hall’s first penalty then put Ash­ford 10-7 ahead. A sec­ond try then put the home side 12-10 in front at half-time.

Fus­sell said: I was chuffed with the boys’ at­ti­tude and the wins will come soon.”

Ash­ford are at home to Dart­for­dians on Satur­day.

Mean­while, for­mer Ash­ford skip­per Adam Knight and ex-scrum-half Rory Beech both joined Maid­stone in the close sea­son.
