Ill-discipline proves costly
Danny Bushell’s solo try was the highlight in Ashford’s opening-day London South East 2 defeat at Lee Green in south-east London.
Bushell pounced early in the second half, brushing defenders off before diving over in the corner to put the visitors 15-12 in front.
However, Colfes then went in front with a try from a five-metre scrum. This was converted and a penalty was kicked for 22-15.
Henry Hall kicked his second penalty for Ashford before the end, landing it from 45 metres after Fussell had been taken out off the ball.
New skipper Rhys Fussell said: “We were gutted we lost as we played well again but poor discipline let us down, with two yellow cards.
“Peter Walsh took one for the team after several warnings and Dan Sherrin went for handling in a ruck.” OLD COLFEIANS ASHFORD
Earlier, Colfes had gone 7-0 up before Shane Redman crashed over for Ashford.
Hall’s first penalty then put Ashford 10-7 ahead. A second try then put the home side 12-10 in front at half-time.
Fussell said: I was chuffed with the boys’ attitude and the wins will come soon.”
Ashford are at home to Dartfordians on Saturday.
Meanwhile, former Ashford skipper Adam Knight and ex-scrum-half Rory Beech both joined Maidstone in the close season.
