Cross reaches county finals
Luke Cross won a split decision over Aylesham’s Ben Axford at Kemsing to reach the Kent Championship finals. The Ashford Boxing Club youngster, fighting in the 91kg category, gave away height and reach to Axford but did not let this deter him. The opening round saw Cross dominate with solid shots to both the head and body of Axford, not allowing his opponent to work at range. Every time Axford looked to keep things long distance, Cross closed him down with hard punches. The second round saw Cross force the pace early on, while Axford worked hard to get his jab going, connecting with a couple of good straight rights. Cross was told to keep up the pace and pressure by his cornermen going into the last round and carried out the instructions to good effect, throwing punches to both and head and body. Both boxers gave it their all throughout in a contest that deserved to be the final. Meanwhile, Ashford’s Jack Ewbank won a unanimous decision against Kevin Gibbons, of Gravesham, to capture the under-69k county title. Like Cross, Ewbank gave away both height and reach but picked his shots well, not allowing his opponent to settle. He also hit hard to the body when the opportunity allowed.
