Substitute Adam Mercer hit four goals in 12 minutes as Kennington beat Belvedere 6-1 to move into the second round of the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield.

Tom Scorer and Matt Forster added the other two to set-up a trip to Hildenborough Athletic next month.

Mercer, playing his last game before a threeweek break, signed off in perfect fashion, against the Division 1 West opponents.

Manager Dan Scorer said: “Adam is an intelligent player and like me, could see their weaknesses from the sidelines and went on and exploited them.

“The first was probably his best finish but the second and third were good as well.

He added: “We lacked a bit of conviction in the first half and should have been five or six up at half-time but we stepped it up a gear in the second half.”

Ashford United Reserves lost 2-0 at Hollands & Blair Reserves in the first round of the Kent Intermediate Cup.

Debutant Charlie Partridge netted the visitors’ consolation.
