Wife turns in fundraiser who stole cash from Poppy Appeal
The organiser of Ashford’s Poppy Appeal has admitted stealing more than £600 from the fund.
Derek Russell, 53, was caught and reported by his wife after she saw wads of cash in his wallet.
Russell’s role with the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion saw him hit the streets and knock on doors to raise money to help ex-servicemen and their families.
But he was secretly taking cash while other members of staff went to make tea or use the telephone, a court heard.
When challenged by his wife over the thefts, Russell said “Well, they get plenty”.
