60mph is too fast

I wanted to email to give my view on re­duc­ing ru­ral road speed lim­its.

Our lo­cal parish coun­cil has had some in­volve­ment in cam­paign­ing to re­duce the speed limit along the A28 through High Halden to 40mph, and al­though this is work­ing well, it is a fairly straight road through the vil­lage up to Ten­ter­den, how­ever, it beg­gars be­lief that most of the coun­try lanes lead­ing of the A28 have a speed limit of 60mph. My fam­ily and I live on a very nar­row coun­try lane, which is treach­er­ous dur­ing the win­ter months – not only is it wet and icy, but it has lots of sharp bends and blind cor­ners and there have been a num­ber of cars which have ended up in the ditches over the years.

We reg­u­larly walk our dog around the lanes with our three-year-old son (who rides along on his trike) and at times we have all come very close to be­ing hit by cars tear­ing down the lane at high speed.

At cer­tain times of the year there are also a lot of trac­tors around and as our lane is pretty much a sin­gle track, any­one speed­ing around a blind cor­ner would be
