Celebrity back­ing for mu­seum pro­ject

Other ex­cit­ing projects planned for the town in­clude: Ash­ford Bor­ough Coun­cil pur­chased the strug­gling shop­ping cen­tre last year, with the aim of fill­ing the empty units with in­de­pen­dent traders, re­ju­ve­nat­ing the ar­cade and bring­ing more peo­ple into the town.

New shops in­clude Em­po­ria Fab­rics & Crafts and Glam R Us ac­ces­sories.

Other changes in the precinct in­clude mu­sic play­ing, new hang­ing bas­kets, the bins and benches have been painted to im­prove their ap­pear­ance, and the clock has been fixed. A £4 mil­lion model rail­way mu­seum is be­ing pro­posed for the old Klondyke Rail­way Works site in New­town.

The plans in­clude a 30,000sq ft build­ing with a huge dis­play area, lecture and demon­stra­tion theatre, spe­cial­ist model shop, cafe and ob­ser­va­tion deck for vis­i­tors to watch the Eurostar travel over the viaduct.

The scheme has ben­e­fited from the en­dorse­ment of celebri­ties like The Who front­man Roger Dal­trey and pre­sen­ter and mu­si­cian Jools Hol­land.

The Ash­ford In­ter­na­tional Model Rail­way Ex­cel­lence Cen­tre has sub­mit­ted a pro­posal for the mu­seum to the coun­cil, and a de­ci­sion is ex­pected later this year.
