Marden Russets v Blackheath and OEs 2nds. Kent gained revenge in the quarter-finals of the Liberty Trophy by defeating the county who had beaten them at the same stage last year. They progressed to the last four on Saturday with a 138-104 win against Dorset, a match played at Victory Indoor Bowls Club in Portsmouth. The first half saw Kent hold on to an early lead but as the match progressed, Dorset went ahead and gained a 15-shot advantage. However, Kent fought back to claim the win and a earn a home semifinal showdown against Northamptonshire on Saturday, March 12. Early in the quarterfinal, advantages on Ian Honnor’s, Andy Thomson’s and Shaun McCaughan’s rinks offset the other three rinks being down but in the end there were great comebacks especially on Marc McCaughan’s rink as they recovered from 18-4 down to eventually win 23-22. Ashford IBC men’s team were unable to replicate the success of their home Kent League match against Prince Arthur. On home soil Ashford had triumphed on all six rinks but at Gillingham, it was Prince Arthur who came out on top, 143-84. Ashford ladies were beaten 142-93 by Folkestone in the Kent League. The highest winning rink for Ashford was the four of Gill Hawkes, Ann Rutland, Chris Breeds and Audrey Blythe, who won 27-13. Meanwhile, the Army lifted the Interservice Trophy, a competition involving three teams of ex-service men and women. Each team consisted of eight Ashford IBC members. Honours have been shared since the competition began in 2013, with each service previously winning once. This time the Army came out on top with 11 points (104 shots), the Royal Navy were second with nine points (87) and the RAF third with four points (80). The Army’s non-playing captain, Belinda Williams, received the trophy from secretary of the board Jill Howard. In a changed format, where each player played in two games of three wood pairs, all six rinks were used, increasing the involvement of players.
