Dr James Nash, con­sul­tant mi­cro­bi­ol­o­gist at the trust, said: “We would like to re­as­sure pa­tients who have re­ceived the let­ter that the like­li­hood of them hav­ing ac­quired the virus from a pro­ce­dure car­ried out by the health­care worker is low.

“We know some peo­ple will be con­cerned about what this means for them and we have apol­o­gised to pa­tients for any worry caused by this sit­u­a­tion.

“For­tu­nately there are safe and ef­fec­tive treat­ments avail­able to treat hep­ati­tis C in­fec­tion.

“We are com­mit­ted to sup­port­ing pa­tients and are en­sur­ing they have ev­ery op­por­tu­nity to ask any ques­tions they have about hep­ati­tis C and get­ting tested.”
