Police were called after a security threat to Norton Knatchbull Grammar School’s sports day.

Community support officers were drafted to the Julie Rose Stadium last Thursday, where the sports event took place.

Susanne Staab, head teacher of the Hythe Road school, said it was thought the threat was a hoax and simply a “rumour that got out of hand”.

She said: “The school received information from some parents that there were rumours of a threat allegedly made by a student to this school in relation to our sports day.

“The school contacted the police, who carried out extensive investigation into these allegations and considered them to be a hoax. The police assured the school that sports day could go ahead safely.

“There were community support officers around the school and at the Julie Rose Stadium to provide a reassuring presence.

“We have had no suspect packages, no guns, no bombs, It’s a rumour that has got out of hand.”

The police confirmed officers had been made aware of reports of threatening comments on social media.
