Prince Wil­liam asks for in­vi­ta­tion dur­ing mayor’s palace visit

Prince Wil­liam could soon be vis­it­ing Ash­ford.

The Duke of Cam­bridge asked for an in­vi­ta­tion when he met the bor­ough’s mayor last week.

Cllr Ge­orge Koowa­ree and May­oress of Ash­ford Glo­ria Cham­pion had their brush with se­nior roy­alty when they at­tended a Buck­ing­ham Palace gar­den party.

Af­ter miss­ing out on tea and sand­wiches be­cause of traf­fic, the pair thought a glimpse of the Queen would be the high­light of the day.

But their af­ter­noon got even bet­ter as the Duke and Duchess of Cam­bridge walked up their line to­ward the royal tea mar­quee and Prince Wil­liam stopped to ex­tend his hand to the mayor.

Upon see­ing Cllr Koowa­ree’s sur­prise, the Prince smiled and said: “You did not ex­pect this.”

He then asked for an in­vi­ta­tion to the town af­ter Cllr Koowa­ree said it was great place to visit.

The mayor said: “I was sur­prised and thrilled to shake the Duke of Cam­bridge’s hand and will cer­tainly fol­low up on ex­tend­ing an in­vi­ta­tion to him to come and visit our pros­per­ous, grow­ing town.”

Up to 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sand­wiches and 20,000 slices of cake are served at the royal gar­den par­ties.

This year the Queen and the Duke of Ed­in­burgh Prince Philip were ac­com­pa­nied by The Duke and Duchess of Cam­bridge as well as Princess Beatrice and Princess Eu­ge­nie.
