That’s the peppercorn rent paid

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - News -

With the historic white smock mill as a backdrop, Ashford Mayor George Koowaree accepted a symbolic peppercorn as part of a annual ceremony.

Each year the trustees of Willesborough Windmill make the hand-over to signify the peppercorn rent they pay the borough for leasing the councilowned building. It took place on Thursday, May 26.

The Grade II listed structure was built in 1869. It was bought, in a very dilapidated state, and fully restored in 1991 by Ashford Borough Council for the benefit of the town’s citizens.
