Records fall in battle for places
Kent Schools Championships
The weather could have been kinder but the notoriously fickle wind at Ashford and late showers did not prevent athletes from setting six new records in the Kent Schools Championships at the Julie Rose Stadium on Saturday .
There were, more importantly, some 50 qualifying performances for the English Schools Championships at Gateshead on Saturday, July 9, with nearly one third of those being of the higher tariff National Standard.
So there will be plenty for the selectors to ponder after a day of fierce competition.
Four of the records fell to intermediate girls – Immanuela Aliu (Dartford & Gravesham, 11.96sec) in the 100m, Eloise Locke (West Kent, 13.05) in the shot, Victoria Wiltshire (West Kent, 54.21) in the hammer and Emilie Knights-Toomer (St. Augustine & Canterbury, 41.99) in the javelin.
The junior girls added another record, in the pole vault, by Lois Warden (Bexley, 3.10).
Samuel Crick (Sevenoaks & Tonbridge, 4.32.86) set the sixth record, in the intermediate boys’ 1,500m steeplechase.
For Ashford, Alexandra Prickett won the intermediate girls’ 300m hurdles in 50.80sec.
Jessica Carley was sixth in the 1,500 steeplechase, while Faith Etokowo was third in both the high jump (1.50m) and triple jump (9.83m).
In the intermediate boys’ section, Ashford’s Oliver Prior (9.46.75) was third in the 3,000m final, while Marshall Smith finished in the same position in the 1,500m steeplechase (4.43.68).
Thomas Wilton (4.44.60) was ninth in 1,500m, while Chukwudubem Joe-Ejin was sixth in the long jump final with a leap of 5m.
Kian Crawford doubled up in the hammer and javelin finishing second in the hammer (39.43m) and sixth in the javelin (34.05).
Ashford’s Alex Rampton was seventh in the 200m final in a time of 25.31 in the junior boys’ section, while Adesoji Adele-Adewole (4.17m) was 13th and Elliot Martin (4.08) 14th in the long jump.
In the junior girls’ category, Ella Saxby was sixth in both sprint finals. She recorded 13.45m in the 100m and 27.98 in the 200m.
Claudia Adams (16.79m) was fifth in the discus.
