Matt Swaffer went top of the overall standings in the Toyo Tyres BMW Production Class series with two second places in the latest round of the 2016 Championship, at Rockingham in Corby on Sunday.

The Newingreen-based driver claimed a total of 96 points, passing the 300 mark for the season, putting him in front of David Graves with early season rival Harry Goodman, ruled out at the weekend due to illness, now third.

Will Davison won both races, in two close finishes, as his fortunes improved, having written off his car earlier this season.

Matt’s father and race engineer, Roger, said: “We were still very pleased with the performance of the car, and testing couldn’t have gone better which hasn’t been the case before this season, and Rockingham is a tricky oval circuit, and very susceptible to temperature change.

“Matt was third going into the first corner in race one, before Graves suffered a brake pad problem putting him second. He and Davison were separated by only six seconds.”

He added: “We altered the shock absorbers ahead of race two, as we were getting too much oversteer in braking, and we also set the tyre pressures differently.

“Matt was behind Graves again when he braked suddenly in front, Davison going down the outside, and overtaking all of them.

“He pulled away, but then his tyres went. Matt caught him up, and was only a second behind him at the end.”

Swaffer is next in action at Oulton Park in Cheshire on Sunday, July 23.
