Tenterden lost for only the second time this season in the Shepherd Neame Kent League Premier Division, going down by 32 runs at Bexley on Saturday.

The weather caused problems for the second week running, delaying proceedings for two hours and reducing the contest to 35 overs per side.

Skipper Tevis Knight won the toss and put the home side in. They were restricted to 158-9, only for Tenterden to be bowled out for 126.

Sam Weller (44) and Tim Curteis (19) added 60 for the ninth wicket, having come together with the score 60-8, earning praise from their skipper.

Knight admitted: “We knew something like this would happen during the season, but the way our campaign has kicked off, it was disappointing.

“Sam and Tim showed good fighting spirit, dug in, and helped us gain two very valuable batting points.

“It was very unlikely we were ever going to win the game, so the pressure was off them, but they enjoyed themselves.”

Knight added: “It was frustrating, and you were always looking at what the weather was doing, and it was difficult to totally focus on the game.

“We didn’t start until two o’clock, and had we not started then, it was A Griggs b Weller ..............................12 C Laas c Weller b Richards ...............42 A Jain lbw b Vernon ..........................19 M Stiddard lbw b Ball..........................2 L Terry c Rand b Ball ..........................2 G Haley st Price b Curteis..................25 U Jan c Ball b Weller .........................19 J Benn lbw b Weller ............................7 J Bassan lbw b Richards .....................1 H Furze not out ...................................4 M Stevenson not out ...........................5 Extras ...............................................20 unlikely we would have started at all. The wicket was low and slow and the outfield was the same, unable to be cut during the week.

“Our top order didn’t fire, but to their credit Bexley bowled and fielded very well, and we were slightly outplayed by the better side on the day.”

Weller had figures of 3-26, taking his total of wickets for the season to 21, while Tom Richards recorded 2-35, and Adam Ball 2-18.

Tenterden lost openers Andrew Crawford and Chris Vernon with the score on 19. Bharat Popli and Ball both fell to catches behind, with Ben Price, Knight and Tyler Griffin all removed in the space of five runs, and Richards following them back to the pavilion soon afterwards.

Weller’s 38-ball knock included two sixes and two fours. He was supported well by Curteis who faced 49 deliveries. Tenterden travel to bottom-club Dartford on Saturday, renewing rivalry with the side who went up with them, as Division 1 champions last season.

Knight said: “It’s a massive, absolute must-win game for us.

“We have been talking to people experienced in Premier Division cricket, and they reckon 140 points will put us in good stead as we look to preserve our spot for next season, which is another couple of wins.”

Meanwhile Division 1 leaders Tenterden 2nds made it seven wins in a row with a 74-run victory over Bickley Park.

Ben Daking hit 92, including 13 fours and a six, with Luke Mangold (49), Rob Sparks (33 not out) and Paddy Collins (30) all featuriug in a total of 249-7.

Jay Parker (3-33) and Sparks (314 in five overs) then led the way with the ball as Bickley Park were dismissed for 175.

Sam Weller skippered Oxford to a 37-run victory over Loughborough in the MCC Universities final at Lord’s on Tuesday.

The Kent youngster hit 36 off 34 balls with three fours and two sixes, as the Dark Blues recovered from 81-4 to reach 267-9 in their 50 overs.

Weller returned to the attack to dismiss Loughborough’s Sam Grant, before they were eventually dismissed for 230.
