Gift seeds a growing interest in gardening

Students can learn how to grow plants thanks to a new gardening area.

Children at Kennington Academy in Upper Vicarage Road, Ashford, now have an area filled with fruit, vegetables and wildlife attracting plants following a donation from Bybrook Barn Garden Centre.

Designs for the garden were submitted by pupils in an Easter competition, and staff at the horticultural business took elements from each to plan the area outside the school’s hall. Once built, pupils spent lessons helping to plant it and learning about gardening.

Paul Bowen from Bybrook said: “It’s a fantastic way for us to support the local community, and we hope that the project will inspire the next generation of gardeners.”

Kelly Bennett, DT subject leader at the schoo, said:“What they have been able to provide has far exceeded my expectations. The dull patch of grass has been completely transformed in to a lovely garden area for all children to use in school.”
