Local athletes were in action at the British Athletics Championships at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium over the weekend. Former Ashford AC field star Matt Blandford from Charing was eighth in the men’s discus on Saturday. The 20-year-old’s opening throw of 51.97m was a season’s best. Now studying at Exeter University, Blandford was second in the shot putt at the British University Championships in Sheffield earlier this year. Ashford AC’s Debbie Martin failed to register a mark in the women’s high jump on Saturday. Jack Green, who came through the ranks at Ashford AC and who reached the semi-finals at London 2012, booked his place at his second Olympics to end a turbulent four years. Having already run the necessary Olympic qualifying times, the Hythe hurdler claimed second place in the 400mH final on Sunday despite a stumble on the final bend leaving him trailing Seb Rodger. Green, however, stormed down the straight and finished just 0.04secs behind Rodger in 49.49secs and secure his place on the TeamGB plane to Rio. Green crashed out in the London semi-finals and admitted: “I’ve definitely got some unfinished business. I’ve barely run in the past four years, I have had my time off.” He added: “Today was a job. Obviously I’d like to win but I really don’t care. “I’m going to Rio and that’s what today is about. After the last four years, it’s nice just to be going.”
