Opening pair help Town rediscover winning habit

Ashford Town

-

A century opening stand between skipper Liam Tegg and Luke Reeves laid the foundations for Ashford Town’s return to form with a 74-run win over Old Wilsonians at Hayes on Saturday.

Reeves (101) scored his first ton of the season and Tegg hit 84 as Town reached 243-8 before dismissing the home side for 169 to record their first win since beating the same team at Stacians Park in May.

The opening stand spanned 35 overs, with the rest of the batsmen chipping in with quick runs. Connor Hammond was the pick of the OW bowlers with 4-45.

Tegg then opened the bowling with his off breaks, before leg spinner Craig Buckham got to work as second-bottom Town completed a good all-round display which saw them close the gap on nearest rivals Nonington to four points.

Tegg said: “Luke and I started slowly. We grafted in the first 10 overs, before finding a different gear in the middle of the stand.

“He batted nicely throughout and I struck the ball better than I have all year and felt good from ball one.

He added: “I have felt in good form all season, without playing that long innings.

“The pitch was a good wicket and spin friendly, with it being dry all week and Darren Cooper bowled a nice 10-over spell in the middle.

“We have been a bit unlucky over the last few weeks with a couple of games abandoned which we could have won, so it was nice to win again.”

Gary Sutton hit 76 and Sam Kennett 60 as Town 2nds (199) lost by 58 runs at home to Cowdrey (258-5) in 2nd XI Division 5.
