Mu­si­cian shines in com­pe­ti­tion

An Ash­ford School sixth form pupil has been awarded the pres­ti­gious Paul Neville Shield af­ter com­pet­ing in the Mar­lowe Young Mu­si­cian of the Year com­pe­ti­tion.

James Short, pi c t ured, who has al­ready won a s ought- af t e r or­gan schol­ar­ship to Ox­ford Uni­ver­sity, was also named run­ner-up at the com­pe­ti­tion at the Mar­lowe The­atre in Can­ter­bury last week.

James and fel­low pupil Jervis Wei both per­formed move­ments from Rach­mani­nov’s Sec­ond Piano Con­certo.

John Hall, the school’s di­rec­tor of mu­sic, said: “Our two fi­nal­ists gave highly im­pres­sive per­for­mances. This is a ma­jor com­pe­ti­tion and gives stu­dents a won­der­ful op­por­tu­nity to play with a pro­fes­sional or­ches­tra.”
