Roundabout gets Stonehenge-style transformation
The revamp of a roundabout on one of the main approaches to Ashford town centre has been likened to Stonehenge.
The roundabout at Mace Lane, by the Henwood Industrial Estate and Tesco Express, has been upgraded to display colourful plants and a new stone centrepiece.
Work on creating the new-look roundabout layout began on Tuesday of last week, and the large stones erected there have been dubbed by resident Andy Clark and others as a ‘Stonehenge’ lookalike.
Pebbles have been positioned at the base of the stones on the roundabout.
Ashford Borough Council (ABC) said it hoped the roundabout would create an attractive first impression of the town for visitors travelling to Ashford by car along Hythe Road.
ABC said on its Facebook page: “We apologise for any disruption to traffic which may occur, and we will aim to keep this at a minimum.”
Other roundabouts that are either getting or have had a facelift include Orchard Heights (near Repton Park), The Street (Kennington), Spearpoint Corner (Kennington) and Malcolm Sargent Road (junction of A2070 with Bad Munstereifel Road).
The work is being funded by £87,177 of New Homes Bonus money.
Cllr Clair Bell, ABC portfolio holder for public interaction and borough presentation, previously said: “ABC is dedicated to maintaining the upkeep of the borough for its residents and visitors, which is why we are enhancing the appearance of several of our roundabouts.
“The improvements will not only brighten up the borough, but the refurbished roundabouts will also create an attractive first impression of the town for visitors travelling to Ashford by car.”
