Spartans pull out of showpiece at short notice
Shepway Spartans made the surprise decision to withdraw from the league just 24 hours before they were due to face Kennington in the final of the Val Helen League Cup. Spartans, who joined the league in 2014 after switching from the Hythe & Folkestone competition, announced their decision to fold the club on Saturday afternoon. The announcement caused a series of frantic phone calls by the league’s management committee, who admitted they had never heard of a situation when cup finalists withdrew from a competition so close to the final taking place. Beaten semi-finalists and last season’s runners-up Stanhope & Beaver Rangers gratefully accepted the late invitation to play in Sunday’s cup final.
