Nationwide steps into shoe shop
A building society says it will move into a former show shop in the autumn.
Nationwide has put up signs announcing its arrival at the County Square Shopping Centre, next door to Starbucks.
The shopfront has been empty since the closure of Clarks in March 2014 and has been subject to speculation as to who would move in.
Earlier in 2014 Nationwide announced it had dropped its plan to move into the shop and said it would continue to serve customers from its High Street branch.
But after a U-turn, it will now be opening at the shopping centre, occupying a prominent spot in the High Street and at the entrance to the precinct itself.
County Square Shopping Centre manager Frances Burt said: “Nationwide is the world’s largest building society with around 15m customers and we are delighted to be able to welcome them to one of our prime locations.
“The fact that this is ideal for both the High Street and our centre will be of benefit to the people of Ashford and we are looking forward to seeing the brand new premises.”
