Caretaker leaves over knife scare at school
A head teacher says a caretaker involved in an outburst in front of shocked pupils is no longer employed at the school.
Paramedics were called to the Norton Knatchbull School at lunchtime on the final day of term before the Easter holidays last month.
The caretaker was seen “behaving erratically” in front of pupils, and it is believed that the incident involved a knife.
It happened just days after an Ofsted inspection, and school head Susanne Staab sent an email to parents about the outburst.
Ms Staab said: “During the lunch hour today, a member of our staff was suddenly and unexpectedly taken very poorly and started to behave erratically.
“This was witnessed by some of our students who reported it to staff. Lunchtime duty staff arrived on scene very promptly and dealt with the incident swiftly and sensitively.
“An ambulance was called and the member of staff was taken to hospital for treatment.”
Ms Staab said pupils who had witnessed the incident had been offered full pastoral support, and said the grammar school in Hythe Road, Ashford, has now carried out an investigation.
In a follow up email sent to parents this week she said: “I write Head teacher Susanne Staab to confirm that we have completed our investigation into the incident which occurred at school on Friday, March 31, and that we have taken the appropriate follow-up action.
“The member of staff con- cerned is no longer employed at the school.”
Ms Staab did not comment on whether the caretaker, who is a teenager himself, was dismissed from his role for misconduct, or whether he had resigned.
Neither has she commented on questions about whether any pupils had faced disciplinary action over the incident.
She added: “The school will continue to support any students who witnessed the incident and who feel they would benefit from discussing the matter further.”
