Spring-clean has sprung a few sur­prises

This week we will be mov­ing into our new of­fice in Park Mall, leav­ing our North Street of­fice which has been our home for more than 20 years.

The move has co­in­cided with the ar­rival of spring, and in time hon­oured fash­ion we have started our very own spring clean, which has turned up some sur­pris­ing arte­facts from the by­gone days of lo­cal jour­nal­ism.

It re­ally is quite re­mark­able how much junk can ac­cu­mu­late, gath­er­ing dust in draw­ers and fil­ing cab­i­nets.

We have found moun­tains of old pho­to­graph files, long re­dun­dant due to the ar­rival of our dig­i­tal archives.

Some favourites in­clude a pho­to­graph of hov­er­craft rac­ing, and an­other of a gen­tle­man called Alan Hick­mott on a bi­cy­cle be­ing pulled by huskies.

We also found a rather more racy col­lec­tion of snaps, which show scant­ily clad young women at the pumps of a petrol sta­tion, taken in 1966 –the year Eng­land won the World Cup. We are baf­fled as to what the event was and won­der if the young women pic­tured are still liv­ing in Ash­ford.

There have been stacks of Kent Vil­lage Cricket League hand­books from 1998 to 2008, and even old ath­let­ics mag­a­zines which have lain
