Dad’s running helped by son on training outings
A Brabourne Lees dad will be running to raise money for JDRF, a charity supporting people with type 1 diabetes.
Ashley Bellwood’s son Maceo, nine, was diagnosed with the condition when he was just six.
Mr Bellwood said: “I knew very little about the condition before Maceo was diagnosed.
“It’s a full-time job controlling his blood sugars and making sure he doesn’t go into a hyper or a coma.
“My wife Kay is a real star with all she does for Maceo.”
Mr Bellwood said he was inspired to run his first marathon two years ago shortly after Maceo was diagnosed.
Now he is looking to complete his second marathon for the international charity and has been out training for an improved time.
He added: “Maceo has been coming out on some of my training runs with me, or meeting me for the last leg of them.
“We have to give him glucose, are constantly checking his blood sugar levels and we have to sit down and rest if he gets low.
“As a parent it breaks your heart because he should not have to think about his blood sugar constantly.
“But despite everything, he doesn’t let it stop him from doing anything.
“He is my inspiration and I want to make him proud.”
