Ash­ley Buck­ham was named ath­lete-of-the match as Ash­ford AC fin­ished sec­ond in the open­ing South­ern Ath­letic Divi­sion 1 East meet­ing of the sea­son, at Med­way Park in Gilling­ham on Satur­day.

Buck­ham won both the long jump and triple jump com­pe­ti­tions – set­ting per­sonal bests in both – and was nom­i­nated by all four com­pet­ing teams.

Ash­ford made an ex­cel­lent start to the cam­paign, fin­ish­ing on 193 points, nine be­hind win­ners and long-term ri­vals Maid­stone & Med­way (204). Croy­don Har­ri­ers (192) were third, with Da­co­rum & Tring (153) fourth.

A to­tal of 31 ath­letes rep­re­sented the club, 21 men cap­tained by Lewis Smith and 10 women led by Han­nah Owen.

They put to­gether sev­eral out­stand­ing per­for­mances, in­clud­ing 33 PBs and 30 sea­son bests.

Team awards went to Alex Warfe and Gemma Carter Collins, with Mar­shall Smith and Alex Prick­ett, pick­ing up ju­nior prizes.
