Buckham excels in opener
Ashley Buckham was named athlete-of-the match as Ashford AC finished second in the opening Southern Athletic Division 1 East meeting of the season, at Medway Park in Gillingham on Saturday.
Buckham won both the long jump and triple jump competitions – setting personal bests in both – and was nominated by all four competing teams.
Ashford made an excellent start to the campaign, finishing on 193 points, nine behind winners and long-term rivals Maidstone & Medway (204). Croydon Harriers (192) were third, with Dacorum & Tring (153) fourth.
A total of 31 athletes represented the club, 21 men captained by Lewis Smith and 10 women led by Hannah Owen.
They put together several outstanding performances, including 33 PBs and 30 season bests.
Team awards went to Alex Warfe and Gemma Carter Collins, with Marshall Smith and Alex Prickett, picking up junior prizes.
