Opening day event produces joint winners
The Mayor, Cllr Pamela Smith, officially opened Tenterden Bowls Club’s new season on Sunday. She sent down the first bowl before hosting the club’s first event of the 2017 programme – the Mayor’s Cup – with 23 members taking part. The competition ended in a tie with the trophy shared by Linda Harper and club captain Ray Walker. Tenterden are opening their doors on Bank Holiday Monday offering the public a chance to try out the sport for themselves. They will be outside the Town Hall tomorrow (Friday) to publicise the event which takes place between noon and 5pm. Coaching will also be available.
David and Sandie Smith are the first husband and wife men’s and ladies’ captains in Ashford Town’s history this season. David said: “We both wanted to take up bowls, following our retirement, not just for the competition element but the enjoyment of taking part together as well as the social side.” The President’s and Captain’s teams drew 53 points each in their game to mark the opening day of the season at Church Road. Town lost 85-81 in a friendly at New Romney. Vic Cook, Ivor Groves and skip Barry Hadfield were the highest scoring rink, winning 28-18.
