Open­ing day event pro­duces joint winners

The Mayor, Cllr Pamela Smith, of­fi­cially opened Ten­ter­den Bowls Club’s new sea­son on Sun­day. She sent down the first bowl be­fore host­ing the club’s first event of the 2017 pro­gramme – the Mayor’s Cup – with 23 mem­bers tak­ing part. The com­pe­ti­tion ended in a tie with the tro­phy shared by Linda Harper and club cap­tain Ray Walker. Ten­ter­den are open­ing their doors on Bank Hol­i­day Mon­day of­fer­ing the pub­lic a chance to try out the sport for them­selves. They will be out­side the Town Hall to­mor­row (Fri­day) to pub­li­cise the event which takes place be­tween noon and 5pm. Coach­ing will also be avail­able.

David and Sandie Smith are the first hus­band and wife men’s and ladies’ cap­tains in Ash­ford Town’s his­tory this sea­son. David said: “We both wanted to take up bowls, fol­low­ing our re­tire­ment, not just for the com­pe­ti­tion el­e­ment but the en­joy­ment of tak­ing part to­gether as well as the so­cial side.” The Pres­i­dent’s and Cap­tain’s teams drew 53 points each in their game to mark the open­ing day of the sea­son at Church Road. Town lost 85-81 in a friendly at New Rom­ney. Vic Cook, Ivor Groves and skip Barry Had­field were the high­est scor­ing rink, win­ning 28-18.
