FESTIVAL OFF BECAUSE OF COSTS
The rugby club has also announced the cancellation of its popular beer festival in September, and says it is because of rising costs.
Honorary secretary John Heaver said it was a difficult decision for the club to take, but said the club was only just breaking even from hosting the event. Instead the club will focus on a rugby festival.
In a statement on the club’s website, chairman John Norman said: “Over the years that we have hosted the beer festival it has become increasingly popular and we are now in a position where we are the victims of our own success.
“As the event has grown in size we have had to invest considerable amounts of money in fencing, security and local authority regulation, which has made the event commercially unviable. For the past few years our volunteers have invested hundreds of hours of their time to stage the event, for no financial benefit to the club.
“We have therefore decided not to host the festival this year. We appreciate this will be very disappointing to the many thousands of people who have enjoyed the event in the past.
“We thank everyone for their past support, and will review the decision next year.”
