Town lose top spot as middle order falter
Ashford Town conceded top spot in Division 3 after a five-wicket defeat at home to Orpington on Saturday. The third loss of the campaign saw them deposed for the first time this season, slipping behind new leaders Harvel and second-placed Catford & Cyphers. Skipper Liam Tegg hit 73 but Town lost their way, suffering a mini collapse, with three batsman out for ducks in a total of 207. Consistent batting proved the key in Orpington’s reply, led by 47 not out from wicketkeeper Alex Watts as they got home with nine balls to spare. Town trio Fraser Harrison, Simon Taylor and Matt Death all failed to score before keeper Jack Richardson (35 not out) and Luke Perkins (30 not out) boosted things, although Peter Shields (3) and Craig Buckham (13) were both run out in the closing stages. Perkins, Phil Woodger, Buckham and Tegg all took a wicket each for Ashford. Town 2nds just missed out on victory at Hartley Country Club 4ths in Division 5. Darren Cooper, with a rapid 24 not out, took them to within three runs of their target, having joined skipper Neil Tegg (17 not out) with 27 still needed. Town finished on 221-7. David Ling took 4-79 in Hartley’s total of 223-7 – Russell Bennett making an unbeaten 51.
