Temporary car park on its way
Building work on a temporary car park is under way in a bid to ease congestion for motorists after spaces were lost elsewhere in the town.
The Commercial Quarter and Elwick Place cinema are both under construction, leading to the loss of hundreds of car park- ing bays at Dover Place.
But now an extra 100 spaces will be added on derelict land in Elwick Road, including spaces for the disabled, motorbikes and bicycle racks.
The long-stay car park will be open 24 hours a day and the machine will accept the new £1 coin. The fees will be £1.10 per hour and £5 for more than four hours. Charges will not apply after 6pm.
Building work to extend the spaces near the skate park in Tannery Lane are also expected to add a further 180 spaces in the coming months.
