Shop­pers can learn more about the Ash­ford and Ten­ter­den Sa­mar­i­tans in County Square on Saturday.

The char­ity will set up a stall in the shop­ping cen­tre from 10am to 5pm which any­one in­ter­ested in be­com­ing a vol­un­teer or find­ing out about the work of Sa­mar­i­tans is in­vited to visit.

Sam, the Sa­mar­i­tan rab­bit mas­cot, is ex­pected to make an ap­pear­ance.

The char­ity’s Cliff Rance said: “The lo­cal branch is part of the national Sa­mar­i­tans who aim to pro­vide a lis­ten­ing ser­vice 24 hours a day ev­ery day of the year for peo­ple in need of emo­tional sup­port.

“Call­ers don’t need to be feel­ing sui­ci­dal to call, just un­able to cope with life.

“More vol­un­teers are al­ways needed, both lis­ten­ing vol­un­teers and sup­port vol­un­teers and ap­pli­ca­tions are wel­comed re­gard­less of sex, re­li­gion or eth­nic ori­gin.

“Vol­un­teers get train­ing in ef­fec­tive lis­ten­ing and in the sort of calls to ex­pect and how best to re­spond.”
