A black and ethnic minorities association is holding an awards evening to celebrate the achievements of young people in the town.

Ashford BME Association will host the Young Black Achievers awards to coincide with Black History Month in the UK. It is open to young people aged between 14 and 25.

Ashford MP Damian Green will be there along with Lord Michael Hastings of Scarisbrick, the head of corporate citizenship at global accountancy firm KPMG.

Organiser Maria Olukoya said: “It aims to celebrate achievements of black youths by celebrating positive role models. It also provides a platform to support our youth through the introduction of a mentoring project. The funds raised will be used to develop this which will support young people and help them not to become socially excluded.”

It will take place between 5pm and 10pm on Saturday, October 28, at the Centrepiece Church in Bank Street, Ashford.
