A grieving husband has paid a touching tribute to his wife who was killed in a car crash as she travelled to a wake. Moses Hlabi described mother- of - t wo Mildred Matete Hlabi as “a pillar of strength” who dedicated herself to helping others.

The 43-year-old nurse had worked at the William Harvey Hospital and at numerous care homes in the town.

Mrs Matete Hlabi, of Beaver Road, Ashford, was also a respected deaconess at the Fountain Church off Leacon Road, Ashford and her funeral there last week was attended by an estimated 700 mourners.

The couple met in 1986 and Mr Hlabi said: “She leaves a big void. Mildred was not only well known through the church, but also through her nursing as she cared for so many people.”
