Dig out the bunting - best dressed boats will be bobbing along the River Medway to Maidstone this weekend.

The official Maidstone Boat Gathering - formerly Maidstone River Festival - will come to the riverside in the town centre in the afternoon on Saturday, July 28.

On a much smaller scale than its big brother the River Festival, the event is now a celebration of the boats which use the river, and the boat owners who love it.

One of the festival’s most popular events, the raft race, is making a return. Being held in aid of the Heart of Kent Hospice, teams of six will be taking to the river in their homemade craft, vying for titles including First Past the Post and Best Dressed.

There will also be an evening parade of decorated boats. The gathering will be opened by the mayor Maidstone at noon.
