No thought behind recycling scheme

-

It is not rocket science as to why the take up of the new recycling scheme has not been taken up (Looking At Smarter Ways To Get More People Recycling Waste, Kentish Gazette, July 21).

Firstly there was zero consultation with the people who were going to use this costly new service where a lot of problems could have been ironed out beforehand.

The sheer arrogance of the people responsible for rolling it out beggars belief.

We used to have a system for recycling. Admittedly it was for paper and cardboard. It wasn’t perfect but it worked the council provided large transparent plastic sacks so it was easy to put paper and card in and lightweight to transport in my case down a flight of stairs on collection day as I live in an upstairs flat.

The ‘new’ system is virtually unworkable as you are now required to store, somewhere in a small flat, two large boxes which are heavy enough when empty let alone when full and require two hands to carry.

In a designated elderly person area, it is frankly dangerous to try to carry these boxes downstairs as they take both hands and you cannot either hold the bannister or see where you are going.

Same with caddies these things are heavy when full and elderly people can’t manage them.

The whole system was implemented without any real thought about the residents that would be stuck with it at huge cost to the taxpayer. Jill Clarkson Valley Road, Canterbury
