Husband and wife make a winning team at show
It’s a big success as growers fill hall with colourful displays
The Nailbourne Horticultural Society is celebrating after hosting a hugely successful summer show.
Bridge Village Hall was a riot of colour on Saturday, with an increase in the number of exhibitors and displays from last year.
Show secretary Kathy Walder said: “The show went very well, better than expected with a wonderful array of exhibits.
“The judge of the flower and vegetable show was very complimentary, saying it was the best local show he had been to so far this year.
“Our entries were up on last year and a lot of local people attended.”
For the second year in a row, Peter and Linda Ellis were the main prizewinners.
They won Champion Cottage Gardeners Cup for most points in the vegetable section, the Tankard for a collection of three vegetables, the Silver Rose Trophy for most points in the flower classes, the Sarah Louise Cup for most plants for floral art and the Fremlins Challenge Cup for most points in the cookery classes. They also collected the Husband and Wife Cup for most points as a husband and wife team, the Blee Cup for most points in the show overall and the Open Cup for their photograph, entitled Wet! Wet! Wet! in the Garden.
The couple also shared the Handicraft Plate with Julia Cooper.
Among the other winners were Una Whitamore, who received the Hawkins Cup for the best newcomer in the flower classes and also won the Silver Plate, presented to the winner of the Prettiest Small Garden.
Tony Walder won the Pewter Tankard for the Best Kept Vegetable Garden, while Kathy Walder received the Silver Rose Bowl for the Most Picturesque Garden.
John Robbins won the Whitten Spencer Cup for the Chairman’s Challenge, which this year was to grow on a coleus seedling.
Mrs Walder added: “I would like to say a big thank you to all the committee, to those members who exhibited and to those who supported us on the day.”
