Hosts edge league champions

Barham Bowls Club ended the outdoor season by playing host to a successful East Kent Mixed Triples League, oneday event and presentati­on dinner last Tuesday.

Barham were rewarded for their efforts by winning the event on a countback by a single end over league champions, Herne Bay.

Other teams taking part were Ashford Town, Birchingto­n, Canterbury, Cliftonvil­le, Faversham and Minster, all of whom fielded two mixed triples in a seven-session match.

The Barham winning teams were Damian Conroy, Rita Cleaver and Ralph Watts, and Ray Hatton, Rita Smith and Neil Sladden.

Chislet Colliery lost by 27 shots on the road at Wear Bay, winning just two of the five rinks played at the Folkestone club. Chislet won just one of six rinks played at Boughton and went down by 38 shots overall. Canterbury ladies’ chairlady Joy Burton oversaw victory by a single shot against a team representi­ng captain Sue Close in the ladies’ 50th anniversar­y match on Sunday. Captain 96 Chairlady 97 Yvonne Gambrill, Maureen Aitkin, Sally Blissett lost 22-14 to Moira Austin, Eileen Barrett, Chrissie Barr; Linda Fletcher, Jane Webster, Maureen Dilnot won 22-8 against Gail Hone, Sue Longley, Christiann­e De Weduwe; Carole Rickard, Sandra Swann, Carole Nelson won 18-13 against Kay Lloyd, Val Hughes, Sue Mates; June Mitchell, Rosemary Wheeler, Sue Close won 23-14 against Liz Long, Joy Burton, Barbara Grundy; Ann Burton, Alison Mcdonald, Sue Knott lost 16-11 to Margie Beckerlegg­e, Junco Lord, June Strouts; Pat Vaughan, Jenny Wilkinson, Jean Bourner lost 24-8 to Pat Vaughan, Jenny Wilkinson, Jean Bourner.

Simon Willis beat Bryan Nicholson 21-18 to win the men’s Court Cup, a competitio­n between players who had not won a singles competitio­n at the club.

The men’s closing day match saw a 27-shot defeat for captain Colin Strouts against the president’s side, who triumphed 122-95.

A closing week competitio­n was played by 42 members with a rolling score over the best four of the six games.

The eventual winner was Dave Todd with Malcolm Nicholson in second, Andrew Burton in third and Margaret Nevell in fourth.

Whitstable split the six rinks played at Herne Bay three apiece but edged to victory by a single shot on Thursday. Herne Bay 96 Whitstable 97 Ron Pring, Chris Twyman, Alan Reid won 26-10; Phil Gardiner, Derek Gann, Brian Watson won 20-11; Garth Coates, Ronald Vaz, Norman Toby won 18-17; Brian Reynolds, Norman Tilley, Martin Hakes lost 14-13; Peter Boeg, Brian Ball, John New lost 16-10; Trevor Hall, Gareth Porter, Paul Browning lost 28-10.

Whitstable went down by 20 shots at Kearsney after losing four of the six rinks. Kearsney 98 Whitstable 78 Brian Gentle, Ronald Vaz, Martin Hakes won 18-8; Brian Watson, Brian Batchelor, John New win 16-11; Norman Toby, Chris Twyman, Gareth Porter lost 17-13; Bob Davey, Ian Palmer, Brian Reynolds lost 12-8; Alan Reid, Garth Coates, Jim Ratcliffe lost 24-14; Phil Gardiner, Norman Tilley, Fred Goodger lost 29-9.

Two teams from Faversham came third in the East Kent Mixed Triples League one day event at Barham. Faversham lost by 10 shots playing mixed triples at New Romney. New Romney 97 Faversham 87 L.tucker, T.schofield, Janet Wimble won 15-11; G.dacosta, K.jackson, J.winslow lost 20-14; R.cordell, Sheila Howard, G.ashurst won 25-9; D.ayres, Vi Mannouch, M.butt drew 17-17; D.mitchell, Margaret Wills, J.fullagar lost 20-9; B.meadows, Barbara Franklin, P.ellison lost 20-7.

In the final game of the season, teams representi­ng men’s captain David Evenden and ladies’ captain Janet Wimble did battle on Saturday with the men’s team winning by 24 shots. Faversham hosted the Spitfire Trophy Tournament, sponsored by Shepherd Neame, on Sunday with UK Paper winning the ahead of Birchingto­n, while Sturdee beat Whitstable to win the Plate.
